The Black Dot, What Do You See?

For seven years, I was privileged to be an associate professor at two Christian universities.  What you are about to review is an example of a lesson I would present to my students.  Privileged to instruct and influence minds, I was even fortunate to have two Deans who specifically asked me to introduce the discipline of “critical thinking” to the students.  The Deans well understood the educational system was failing miserably preparing young adults to think critically about their world; no longer engaging them to look for answers outside the normal, predictable methods becoming so common place in academia.  My charge was: “Get the students to think…get the students off of their lazy perches and begin to challenge their thoughts, opinion, and preconceived ideas.  Do not have them just study to pass an exam, but challenge them to learn on the way.”  What you are about to read is the type of exercise I would give them to complete in class in a timed session.

General Michael Flynn defense fund Fellow patriots, please listen to this short, inspiring message from General Flynn. General Michael Flynn exemplifies patriotism, courage, and love of God and country - despite some of his own countrymen relentlessly attacking him. Donations for his defense are greatly appreciated. If you can only give $5.00, please do so - every little bit helps. Thank you so much, and God bless. Letter from General Flynn.

Most of my students were adults obtaining their Bachelor’s Degree, and many of these students were police officers.  Seasoned police officers have seen much, and have developed strong walls from which to protect themselves from the emotional turmoil so associated with their work.  It is a challenge to get behind the emotional wall of a seasoned cop.  It is even more challenging to get them to think they may not already be critical thinkers given the investigative skills they have learned.  So now I present to you the assignment below for your review and consideration.  Go ahead…be serious about your answer.

Please enjoy the photographs, and think about the message … and the ability to see all the beautiful creations God has given us…..

  1. I love it! I didn’t think about the black dot but having come from an abusive past I’ve had to learn to dwell on the “white part of the paper” since the Lord’s healing of the “black dots.” In fact, I used something similar in my abuse support groups. Black dots all over the heart drawn on paper. I shall copy and paste, if possible, on my cyber support group blog. Good stuff!

    • Greetings Sue!
Thank you for sharing your heart. Each of us, in one form or another, has to learn as you say, “to dwell on the white of the paper” since the Lord is in the process of healing the “black dots” in our lives. No always easy, I get it! Not always fun, and often even painful. But as we learn to bring along side a couple of trusted folks who will stand by us, pray during our transformation in healing, and protect our emotions as they run the gammit, we can navigate through the valley of the shadows, and come out on the other side more whole, more clear of thought and emotion and vision, and more the person the Lord and our Heavenly Father intended us to be before the beginning of time; before we were born; before our parents and their parents, etc. were even born. The White Paper is truly important, but NOT running from, nor focusing solely on the Black Dot is equally important. Peace of our Lord, Sue! ~LJR
