Years in the making, the Democrat Party’s transition away from a political institution fighting for American workers and citizens is now complete, as evidenced by a series of actions taken by leaders and rank-and-file members since the election of Barack Obama as president.
First, the most recent outrage, as reported by the Washington Examiner:
Democrats are fighting hard for the right of Mexican workers to vote by secret ballot on union matters, just a few years after they fought to weaken the requirement for a secret ballot in U.S. union elections.
The Democrats are demanding secret union ballots in Mexico before they’ll consider supporting President Trump’s U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade.
“Critically, previous versions of the [Mexican labor legislation] failed to ensure that workers will be able to exercise a free, secret, and personal vote on the collective bargaining agreement that will cover their terms and conditions of work,” 82 House Democrats warned in an April 12 letter to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, noting that the particular provision was of “paramount importance.”
However, during Obama’s reign, most Democrats who signed the letter to Lighthizer backed legislation known as the Employee Free Choice Act, permitting most unions to be recognized via cards signed by workers, which eliminated the need for the federal government to monitor secret ballot elections.
“Why are Democrats determined to deny American workers the right to secret ballot union elections, but willing to uphold them as necessary and correct in Mexican union matters?” asked Marty Boughton, a spokesman for Republicans on the House Education and Labor Committee, the Washington Examiner reported, adding:
The April 12 letter was written by Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., and co-signed by Reps. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, and James P. McGovern, D-Mass., among others.
They argued in it that Mexico had to meet a labor rights provision of USMCA that says that Mexico must adopt “an effective system to verify that elections of union leaders are carried out through a personal, free, and secret vote of union members.” These lawmakers have made similar demands throughout the debate on USMCA, sending a letter in April 2018 to Lighthizer signed by 94 Democrats.
Ten years ago, however, Democrats were pushing for a different kind of ‘reform’ for unionized American workers.
A key provision of the Employee Free Choice Act was that should the National Labor Relations Board, the federal entity that monitors union elections, find a majority of workers have signed pro-union cards then it “shall not direct an election but shall certify the individual or labor organization as the representative.”
The provision was known as “card check,” and the legislation was regularly supported overwhelmingly by Democrats the four times it was introduced beginning in 2003.
Critics of card check have long argued that it leaves individual workers open to intimidation and retaliation. They also say that such elections are subject to fraud, and that secret ballots protect the integrity of the balloting.
“It is the height of hypocrisy that many of the signers of this letter are also on record as seeking to effectively end the secret ballot election for the unionization of American workers,” Patrick Semmens, vice president for public information at the nonprofit National Right to Work Committee, which opposes card check, said, the Washington Examiner noted.
Hypocrisy aside, this isn’t the only way in which the modern Democrat Party has worked specifically to undermine Americans:
— Democrats in Washington and around the country support legislation allowing illegal immigrants to vote in local and state elections, which directly undermines the balloting choices of American citizens;
— By supporting open borders, Democrats support watering down the workforce with cheap labor that undercuts American wages, stifles wage growth, and takes jobs from our people;
— By opposing POTUS Donald Trump’s all-out effort to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and build his promised wall, Democrats have sided with people who are criminals — people who have broken our laws in order to gain access to our country, even as the party expects American citizens to obey laws they pass;
— The party made the explicit choice in 2011 to “abandon” white working class voters, as outlined in a New York Times op-ed by Thomas Edsall:
For decades, Democrats have suffered continuous and increasingly severe losses among white voters. But preparations by Democratic operatives for the 2012 election make it clear for the first time that the party will explicitly abandon the white working class.
All pretense of trying to win a majority of the white working class has been effectively jettisoned in favor of cementing a center-left coalition made up, on the one hand, of voters who have gotten ahead on the basis of educational attainment — professors, artists, designers, editors, human resources managers, lawyers, librarians, social workers, teachers and therapists — and a second, substantial constituency of lower-income voters who are disproportionately African-American and Hispanic.
— The party is filling with new faces who constantly berate our country as racist, bigoted, homophobic, imperialistic, fascist, and not deserving of the hard-won good fortunes our people have acquired.
Democratic Leftists supported NFL players kneeling during our national anthem. They oppose praying before high school sporting events. They refuse to allow speakers with competing points of view to speak on campuses and in the public square. They support taking away the free speech rights of people they disagree with. They believe in censorship of competing ideas. Their idea of “criminal justice reform” is hamstringing police and letting criminals of color go free. They support giving illegal aliens health care, free college tuition, and driver licenses. They support tax laws that would allow more government confiscation of your wealth.
And it was Barack Obama’s Democrats who attempted to overturn the 2016 election, then undermined POTUS Trump afterward with the objective of driving him from office.
Some have said today’s Democratic Party “isn’t your dad’s party.” That’s true; this isn’t the party that presided over the Industrial Revolution and helped win World War II. It’s a party that clearly does not have the interests of American citizens at heart anymore.
There’s just no denying it anymore.
