(National SentinelTrumped: A North Carolina high school principal has been replaced after she ordered a student to remove his pro-Trump jersey at a patriotic event during a football game.

Former Harnett Central High School Principal Cindy Gordon asked 18-year-old Matthew Collins to remove his jersey because she said it was political, WRAL reported on Friday.

The front of the shirt read “USA” in red, white, and blue while the back of the jersey had “Trump” with the number “45” below.

The former principal told Collins that some parents had complained about his shirt (so what?) and as such he would have to remove it if he wanted to remain at the game, according to the teen’s father, Michael Collins, WRAL reported.

Matthew Collins did wind up leaving the game.

But why should he have left? The station reported that students were encouraged to dress patriotically for the Oct. 5 football game, ABC11 added.

Patriotism is inherently political, or it can be. So what’s the problem wearing a shirt that honors and recognizes the president of the United States, no matter who he is?

“As long as the expression does not disrupt, and is not reasonably expected to disrupt, the educational mission of the school system, these rights include wearing clothing expressing political messages or supporting political candidates,” Harnett County school district spokeswoman Natalie Ferrell said, ABC11 reported.

Michael Collins, a registered Democrat, said his son’s jersey was not meant to promote President Donald Trump.

“We’re not promoting Donald Trump,” Michael Collins told ABC11. “He’s our president. Again you’ve got to respect your president.”

Catherine Jones, the current principal at Harnett Primary, will replace Gordon, the school said in a statement.

“Again, we want to emphasize that Harnett County Schools supports and affirms students’ rights to express themselves — including wearing clothing expressing political messages or supporting political candidates or officeholders — in ways that are not expected to disrupt school or school events,” the statement said.
