The question of Jesus divinity or lack thereof has been around since Jesus Himself walked the earth. Jesus own people the Jews largely disbelieved in Christ’s claims to not only be from God – but to actually be God. Yes as a matter of fact, Jesus did claim to be God and not only the Son of God.

The Birth of Jesus

Jesus birth alone should signify that He is significant and different from all others including the Prophets and Moses as well. Normally the creation of a human being requires the sexual interaction of a man and a woman, such was not the case with the birth of Christ. In Matthew 1:20 the angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream and tells him, “for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost”. So Jesus although being human was conceived by the power of God in Mary.

Many are those who do not believe in Jesus but in only the Father; there are also those who do not believe and do deny the birth of our Lord was in way special or that it was foretold in the Old Testament. Isaiah plainly speaks of Christ in Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Even the very city of Christ’s birth was foretold in the Old Testament, to whit:
Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Does Jesus Christ Claim to be God?

You Might Like

No where in the Bible does Jesus utter the words, “I am God”, and so many use this as an excuse to claim that Jesus never said nor did He claim to be divine, to be God. This is false and all who claim Christ was only a man are deceived – such is the power of the god of this earth we live on, Satan. This goes hand in hand with the claim of some that the Bible is simply a book written by men and not to be taken seriously and certainly not divinely inspired and the inerrant Word of God. In either case there is plenty of evidence in the Bible that says otherwise – but some choose to be deceived because admitting that there is a God, (which by necessity of the evidence presented must include Christ) means admitting we are accountable to God. This in turn means that we must make changes in our lives.

Despite the naysayers, Jesus repeatedly claims and even establishes that He is in fact God. An entire book could be written on this…

In Isaiah 42:8 it says: I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another…
So God does not share His Glory, but yet Jesus speaks of God glorifying Him, to whit: John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Some will say these are only the words of Christ or a lunatic – remember Jesus just claimed to share God’s glory as well as claiming to have been with God before the creation of the world.

So would God do anything concerning someone who wrongly proclaimed being God? Yes He would – first a little background: Herod had spoken to a crowd of people, the people proclaimed his oration to be of God and not a man. God’s response: Acts 12:23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
So although Herod did not directly claim to be God, he indirectly did claim to be God by not refuting the words of the people, and God punished him for it. The question here is: would God allow the much stronger claims of Jesus as being God to go unchallenged and unpunished?

In John 8:18 Jesus claims the Father bears witness of Him and sent Him.
In John 8:19 Jesus says if the people knew Him, they would know the Father.
In John 8:23 Jesus says He is not of this world.
In John 8:54 Jesus says His Father honors Him.

At the end of John chapter eight, Jesus claims to have been before Abraham, and not only that – He gives Himself a title God gave Himself in the Old Testament speaking to Moses; I Am. (Exodus 3:14)

In John 16:7 Jesus says He must leave or the Holy Spirit will not come into the world to men, and Jesus says He will send the Holy Spirit. In John 14:16, Jesus says He will pray to the Father, and the Comforter – the Holy Spirit, will be sent and will abide with us forever.

John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Notice what Jesus says here: that belief in Him is necessary for eternal life, and that He; Jesus, will raise him up at the last day.

Next time we will look at the proof that Jesus is God.

  1. As bullheaded as I was for years, (maybe still am) He proved Himself to me but there are those that are even more bullheaded than I was. 🙂 Hopefully He’ll be able to convince them, too.
