Heaven Is For Real, Indeed

Of the the greatest hopes the bible believing Christian has in this age is the Blessed Hope mentioned in Titus 2:13:

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” Titus 2:13

That hope is Jesus returning for His church as He promised He would, right before the start of the Great Tribulation. Leaving this earth and being united with Jesus in Heaven for all eternity is the constant, fervent prayer of Christians all over the world. So, from time to time, when someone comes along with a fantastical tale of “dying” and coming back to life after being in Heaven itself, we need to judge that testimony by what the bible has already declared.

We do not judge the bible by the things we experience, but rather judge our experiences by what the bible has to say about them. The book, Heaven Is for Real, published in 2010, is now a major motion picture on the big screen fresh out of Hollywood.

Heaven Is For Real is the story of little Colton Burpo who came down with stomach pains and a high fever. His appendix has burst and he goes in for emergency surgery. While on the operating table, little Colton has a vision where he is taken to Heaven and “meets Jesus”. When he awakes he tells that story, as well as conversations he says he heard while being operated on. His father declares this to be “a miracle”, and the book was written. Here now are the major claims of the book compared to the bible. Please read and decide for yourself.

  1. Scared of Jesus: Dad, Jesus had the angels sing to me because I was so scared. They made me feel better” the time… “I was sitting on Jesus lap”Colton is with Jesus, he said, actually sitting on His lap, and yet somehow he is terrified. Not until angels begin to “sing to him” does he begin to feel better. Compare that testimony to the following scriptures:
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27
“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7
  2. Jesus had a ‘rainbow horse’: Colton says Hey dad, did you know Jesus has a horse?”….”Yeah a rainbow horse, I got to pet him.  There’s lots of colors”. Sounding more like a description of ‘My Little Pony‘ instead of the King of Kings on His horse ready to do battle at the Second Coming, lets look at the horse Jesus has in Heaven:
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.” Revelation 19:11
  3. A different Holy Spirit: Colton says that the Holy Spirit is up in Heaven and “shooting down power” for those who need it “It’s the Holy Spirit, “I watched him, He showed me”… ” He shoots down power for you when you are talking in church.” The bible begs to differ with that description:
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” John 14:16,17
The bible says that the Holy Spirit is not “up in Heaven”, but INSIDE each and every born-again believer in Jesus Christ.

We could go on (and on, and on and on…) but I think you get the point. Colton was 100% incorrect in the three major points we listed, and as such his testimony concerning his “trip to Heaven” does not pass the scrutiny of the Holy Bible. The bible says that the Devil can easily be transformed as an “angel of light” in order to deceive people looking for signs, miracle and wonders. In fact, the bible goes on to say that in the end times, it will be signs, miracles and wonders that will be the tool of the Devil:

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” 2 Corinthians 11:14,15

And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon…And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,” Revelation 13:11,13

Colton Burpo indeed was given a “vision of heaven”, but it was not the Heaven mentioned in the scriptures. It is “another heaven” with “another jesus” designed to lead you away from the truth of God’s word, and into a fairy tale land of deception devoid of any and all Holy Spirit power. Not once does Colton mention the precious blood of Jesus Christ that was shed for all who would believe. Not once does he mention that unsaved people go to Hell, he never mentioned Hell one time. We would do well to remember the warning of the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul of deceivers with “another Jesus”:

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:6-8

  1. I had no desire to see this movie. It seem to contradict the word of God which says it is appointed unto a man ONCE to die and then to judgment. Now you can bring up Lazarus but did Lazarus speak of going to heaven and then returning? Once you meet Jesus, all fears are lifted so why would this boy still be scared while in the Presence of pure holy joy? Everyone wants to know the unknown. Jesus himself only described heaven briefly because our finite minds could not comprehend its beauty and glory. He wants us to take him at his word when he says that it is beyond our minds to conceive what God has planned for those who love him. This boy probably did have a vision but I don’t know of what.

On the other hand, if you did not see GOD’S NOT DEAD, I highly recommend it to everyone! What an awesome inspiring Christian based movie! Loved it.

    • I agree mostly. But here is a thought for you: lets say that someone is on the operating table, things don’t go well and that person has a near death experience. Nothing unbiblical is said of this “experience”. We would naturally think this person was near death…what if (and He is) God is in control the whole time and there was never any chance of death but rather an “experience” for His reasons. Remember Paul’s experience. I have read far too many accounts both good–they maybe saw a bright light and felt very loved, and bad–intense heat and flames and the feeling of evil, I cannot pass these accounts off as all invalid. Near death is not death. Even if the body shut down for a few minutes adn they “came back”, that was not death. We are as you said appointed to die once, and no work of man is going to stop that if God has decreed the time to die has come.

But I agree in this case the facts don’t line up. Not a good movie as far as I’m concerned, I have no interest in seeing it.

      • I guess I have to disagree with with the idea that experiences like you noted where people feel very loved or see a light or feel bad and heat and flames etc. could be valid. Paul, I believe, was a very unique exception. People who are obviously not Christians have experienced the same things. I think most people have the idea that good is Heaven and bad is Hell. I can’t discount the fact that UNbelievers think they experience the same thing. This little boy saw us with wings and a light above our heads. The Holy Spirit is blue and we have swords to keep the devil out of Heaven. We also are all about the same age which I read is what Muslims believe. I guess in the end what it boils down to for me is that people will take this as truth and get all excited about it. I know Christians excited about this new movie and I think to myself, why? In the end I think movies/books like this do more harm than good. The little boy also suddenly knew about his deceased older sister that he didn’t previously know about. Satan can be involved with experiences like this as well.

        • Yes Satan can be involved for sure.

Ask yourself this: why would Satan give someone a vision of pure evil? Makes no sense, and he surely would not attempt to deceive anyone with something good. Keep in mind here I referred ONLY to those that do NOT go against what the Bible teaches. Most of what is out there is fake and fraudulent…but I don’t think all of it is fake.

  2. Great point! Nice to see movies that promote decent things instead of the crap Hollywood seems to produce but we need to be very discerning regarding any biblical movies that come to the big screen, or little screen for that matter. We should as pointed out so well, always review scripture and test against the accounts of this movie or any other movie depicting biblical stories. Thanks for pointing out these blatant biblical errors. I do believe that this boy had some type of “experience” but they do not match up to what the bible says about heaven, nor about our Messiah.

    • Precisely but people swallow it up as gospel because it was a kid. Not so…if it does not line up with the Word it does not matter who it was or what they said happened.
