Replacement theology or otherwise known as supersessionism has been taught in the church for the past two thousand years. This type of theology is not only damaging to the church but also has no merit biblically. So what is replacement theology and how did it come about. Historically Jews and gentile believers in Yeshua would gather together, mostly in homes throughout Israel and the diaspora or dispersed areas and worship together. This was after the resurrection and ascension of Yeshua, and large numbers of believers would come together in worship, largely due to the apostle Rabbi Sh’aul and his work in the surrounding areas of Israel. As the numbers grew congregations or bodies of the Messiah would form. During the first century it is estimated that there were over 100,000 Jewish believers in Yeshua as LORD. We often do not think that there were this many Jewish followers. We have read in Acts that on the day of Pentecost alone that 3000 came to believe. The gift of the Ruach HaKodesh or Holy Spirit was upon Peter and the others and that is why 3000 who were from many areas and spoke many languages  all understood what was being spoken and came to believe. The book of Acts chapter 21 reveals that there were tens of thousands of believers meeting in houses. I believe that this is what the LORD intended, for both Jew and gentile to worship together thus having one congregation of believers in unity worshipping together in spirit and truth and love. However due to various circumstances and comments of popular and powerful men there formed a schism between Jew and gentile which still rears it ugly head to this day. For instance every time the was a revolt by the Jews for harsh treatment by the Romans, the Romans would punish the Jews and those who were associating with them would often feel  the weight of the punishment  and distance themselves from the Jewish believers. The Bar Kochba revolt around 135 C.E. and the writings of Justin Martyrs “Dialogue with Trypho the Jew” circulated around 150 C.E. both added to the division of Jew and gentile worshipping together. Justin Martyrs writings began the case for a “New Israel” based on the fact that many Jews rejected Yeshua as Messiah and so logically the gentiles should be considered to replace the Israel of old. The result of this began a consistent and increasingly hostile attitude towards the Jews and all things Jewish. Never mind that the both the Old and New Testament was written almost entirely by Jews.

Marcion, a rich man and a son of a bishop further added to the anti-Hebrew sentiment by publicly claiming that the New Testament was the result of a new teaching revealed by God the Father, Yeshua the Son and The Holy Spirit, whereas the Old Testament was a revelation of a lesser, more distant God. Accordingly then anything related to the Old Testament or Jewish practices were inferior to the New Testament teachings. Other though leaders of the time added to this sentiment often referring to Jews as pigs and lesser creatures then gentile believers. This type of thought all added to what we now call replacement theology, the Church has replaced Israel and all things Jewish, and therefore the claim that the Jews were no longer a valid people group grew and prospered. This anti-semitism has continued through the crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, and even the eventual comments by the well known leader of the Reformation, Martin Luther. Many believe that it was Luther’s writings that influenced Hitler and his hatred for the Jews. Anti- semitism spread throughout much of Europe and Jews were constantly being blamed for many horrible events including the black plague.

Today many Churches continue to believe in this false and harmful doctrine. There is no biblical basis for replacement theology, it is without a doubt a satanic thought that has been prolonged throughout history and must be corrected. It is simply a lie. There is not one place in the bible where God determined that He was through with the Jews and that they have been replaced. Consider Romans 11:25 written by Rabbi Sh’ual, “For , brothers, I want you to understand this truth which God formerly concealed but has now revealed, so that you won’t imagine you know more than you actually do. It is the stoniness, to a degree, has come upon Israel until the Gentile world enters in its fullness; and that it is in this way that all Israel will be saved.” Add to this Romans 11:29, “for Gods free gifts and His calling are irrevocable.” What Rabbi Sh’ual was saying is that the rejection of Yeshua as Messiah by Israel is temporary and that it is now incumbent upon the gentile believers to work for the salvation of all Israel because God’s calling is irrevocable, it will never change. All Israel will be saved, they have never been replaced by the church, or by gentile believers. The anti-semitism of the past 2000 years has only propagated a lie and a deception that needs to be rectified. The church must repent of this deception and love on their Jewish brethren for that is what the Good News is all about. Replacement theology is man made, unbiblical and harmful. The truth must to taught and the church must work to undo the anti-Semitism that has caused this division between Jew and gentile. We must become the one new man Yeshua desires for us to be. One new man, one people all like-minded, united in Messiah.

I call for a reformation to take place within the church. This must happen for all Israel to be saved whereupon the return of Yeshua can occur. For it was Yeshua himself that proclaimed in Matthew 23:29 :For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” Yeshua was talking to the Jews, about the Jews. Israel must come to the knowledge that their savior had come and will return, but next time they must know Him. This can only occur when the church comes into its fullness. In other words the church must become the vessel to the Jews so they would come to know their Messiah. This supernatural event can occur and will occur when God the Father appoints the time for it. Meanwhile we can work to deny replacement theology and replace it with the truth, for this is Gods Kingdom where there is no room for deception and lies.

  1. Rabbi Eric, once again thank you for that very informative message. I cannot for the life of me understand where the heresy of replacement theology ever had its start. It seems that you would have to overlook tons of Scripture verses in order to try to put that make that theory work. I was shocked when I learned that during the Crusades that the Catholic Church was promoting replacement theology adding that it was the Jews who killed Jesus! The Scriptures speak of the remnant of Jews who will be saved. God has put a warning on us that those who curse Israel will be cursed. He would never abandon his people or replace the apple of his eye.

I learn so much from your messages, Rabbi Eric. Thank you.

    • Marianne, thank you for your comments. Replacement theology is still taught today, even after all the events of anti-semitism have been revealed. As I kid I was called a Christ killer and persecuted for being a Jew. God will save His remnant as promised for the Jews are a critical part of Gods plan for the end times. I am blessed to teach the truth and to share it. Thanks for your love for your Jewish brethren and sharing the truth.
      Rabbi Eric

  2. ” May His Blood be upon us and upon our children.”

    • Wulfrano, although the church has its flaws, many churches are waking up and learning their Hebraic roots. There are also more Messianic congregations of both Jew and gentile which is a step in the right direction. We do not have to let this lie continue, let us be the light of truth and help change this type of damaging theology.

  3. I agree with you totally. I had many questions about this a few years ago. I began to pray and search the scriptures. I was eventually led to Paul’s teachings in Romans chapter 10 & 11. I never understood until the Holy Spirit led me to this. And it opened like a flower. This replacement theology is not Biblical. Some teach that the woman in Revelation chapter 12 is the church, this is not Biblical either. It is a poor attempt at man to interpret God’s word. The Bible is inerrant and will interpret itself with the help of the Holy Spirit. He will guide us into all truth. This is very dangerous beliefs as Paul taught us, ‘If some of the branches have been broken off, and you though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others, and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive rood, do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you….. He goes on to say ‘Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.’ Thank you for speaking the truth.

    • Thank you for your comments. It is unfortunate that many churches do not even teach Romans 9-11. What do they fear? I do not understand this but I do know that thanks to people like yourself that are immersed in the Word and the Ruach HaKodesh are learning the truth.
